Pam was a high school teenager going out on a date with a guy she’d known back in junior high. They’d just run into each other at the shopping center a few days earlier. After catching up for a few minutes, he asked her out.

He was nicely dressed when he showed up. He spoke politely to her mother at the door. His car looked buffed and polished for the big night out.

But as soon as he began driving, he lit up a cigarette and turned toward Pam. Then he sneered at her. There was something about that look on his face that sent a shiver up her spine. Pam knew she needed to get out of this guy’s car immediately. She feigned sickness and asked him to take her home before she threw up all over his passenger seat. He did so right away.

Pam relied on her instincts to make excuses and bring about a safe return home.
